The Episcopal Church

As the American branch of the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church has its roots in the Church of England, which has historically followed a middle way between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. We also walk a middle way on issues of authority within the church. We accept the church’s understanding of the spiritual authority of ordained clergy but place strong emphasis on the role of the congregation in the ministry of the parish, as representated by the sharing of authority between parishioners and clergy through the partnership of the Rector and the Vestry.

The foundation of our faith is the celebration of Christ in the two sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is welcoming people into the household of God. Here we acknowledge the presence of God in our souls and share in the hope of God’s kingdom. The celebration of Holy Communion is a prayer of thanksgiving for the redeeming work of Jesus Christ, a remembrance of his life given for us, and an affirmation that we each share in his ministry. We welcome everyone to join us in Communion.

As a part of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts (the largest diocese in the nation), St. Michael’s is connected to the wider church and shares a mission with other churches in our region. We offer our gifts and resources to neighboring churches and seek to learn from the insight and experience of our sister congregations. We have a special partnership with the Church of Our Saviour in East Milton, regularly sharing services and activities to broaden opportunities for worship and community. We also participate in interfaith discussion, worship, and service through our affiliation with the Milton Interfaith Clergy Association, reminding us of the rich diversity of people and faith in this part of Greater Boston.
